The RoadNarrows Camera Pack is Released using Gumstix® OveroSTORM® and E-con 3.2 MegaPixel Camera with OpenCV Support

RoadNarrows LLC announces the release of the RoadNarrows Camera Pack (RNCP) for quick prototyping of open-source embedded vision applications using OpenCV on an embedded Linux kernel.

RoadNarrows has recently been migrating their open-source robotic vision work from gumstix® Overo COM's to OveroSTORM COM's, and the improvement in performance has been impressive. The RoadNarrows Camera Pack (RNCP) uses an e-con Systems 3.2 MP Omnivision camera, a gumstix® Tobi expansion board, and a gumstix® Overo FireSTORM with OpenCV.

RoadNarrows has been using multiple RNCP systems in a networked configuration on a mobile robot platform for real-time vision processing and mapping. Part of this research work has been funded by the National Institutes of Standards and Technology under a Small Business Innovation Research award titled "An Extensible 6DOF Vision Framework for Accurate Location and Pose Estimation in a Scene Graph Context".

The RNCP systems wirelessly stream camera video in H.264 format and can be monitored by a host computer, which may do additional processing such as point cloud determination using GPU technology for 3D environment analysis.

"There was a clear improvement between the quality of the video between the Overo Fire and the Overo FireSTORM. The Overo FireSTORM streaming video was less pixelated, and we were able to transmit at a higher resolution.", Kim Wheeler, CEO of RoadNarrows LLC comments. "I was also impressed at the very simple migration path. It really only took a short time to move from the OMAP 3530 Applications Processor to the DM3730. After receiving a small driver update from e-con Systems for camera support, and a few days of system testing, we were confident that we could migrate to the new COMs without any significant changes to our platforms. The demo applications ran on the new Gumstix Overo STORM COMs with no change."

The RNCP consists of the following components assembled and tested:
